Last Unicorn
From a riddle-speaking butterfly, a unicorn learns that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a now middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn.

Greatly underrated animated film; worth seeing
January 01, 2000
The standard 'quest' material that most fantasy is made of, but in this case heroics and spectacle are secondary to drama

Nearly everyone who waxes rhapsodic over The Last Unicorn starts off noting how they 'grew up' on the film.

Classic '80s animated fantasy has some scary moments.

We don't see stories like this anymore. In point of fact, we never did... which makes this movie all the more wonderful.

Would the act of giving The Last Unicorn an average rating be tantamount to kicking a puppy?
August 30, 2004
A story filled with genuine sweetness and mystery.
April 29, 2004
Weighted with moments of surprising power yet undone by crazed-crank nickelodeon pacing.
December 04, 2016
Has a screenplay that's among the most literate ever written in the English language for what certainly would appear, from all the evidence, to be a "children's movie".
June 08, 2015
Holds a forlorn, poetic beauty that separates it from the more conventional family-targeted animated features of its timeor any era, for that matter.
June 24, 2006
Some horrific moments (the mark of the best fairytales) and some sublimely witty lines.
